Vital Core was awarded the the MADOC contract and took over in July of 2024. As with all new companies there were the typical "rumors" but Vital Core proved themselves quickly to be a company that listens to its employees and makes changes accordingly. Vital Core is not like any other company I have worked for, they are involved and want to see everyone succeed not just those at the top. They pay great attention on patient care as well as the wellbeing of their employees.

I have been with VitalCore since 2018. Over the last 6 yrs we have experienced many growing pains, as all new organizations do. We have made mistakes, but unlike many other organizations we own them and work to do better. Every experience in VitalCore is an opportunity to learn.
VitalCore at its roots is about improving patient care in a correctional environment. Its mission vison and values are ones that align with my own. My role has its challenges but that does not make me love role any less.

Would not recommend VitalCore to even the most experienced or heartless nurses. VitalCore was my first official position out of nursing school. My training consisted of 1 day of shadowing and 1 day of having someone follow me on the cart in a 400 pt correctional facility despite me being very clear that I’m a new nurse. I was promised support, meals provided, 1 hour lunch breaks when in reality there’s some snakes and ZERO breaks in 12 hours. Shadowed a couple intakes and was on my own. They can’t keep their staff because of their lack of trainings and expectations so everyone is burnt out and miserable and working like dogs. I was working 6am-6pm 5 days a week. Meanwhile the supervisor would complain she was over 40 hours a week and leave early meanwhile I was sitting at 65-70. They had me covering 2 RN hole’s as an LPN which I had ZERO training on. All of which is fine. I can deal with staffing issues…Whats not fine & what shouldn’t be tolerated is the incredible lack of accountability from management for the major/ dangerous/ illegal issues taking place. Medications being passed without orders, orders being added to mar without verification from the pharmacy that the physicians don’t know what is what. Multiple medications keep disappearing. Medications that are paid for by ICE or Feds being given to county inmates. County inmates medications that they personally are paying for being given to other inmates. Nursing Care Guidelines not being followed. Some inmates being charged, others not- causing disgruntled inmates which could put nurses in danger. One of the main nurses doing above mentioned was extremely unsafe to work with. Had a medical condition which I’m sympathetic to but when the nurse is incoherent in the daily and has extreme disorientation while passing medications and on multiple occasions requiring me to care for her is not okay.. kept reporting everything to my supervisor and she couldn’t have been any less receptive/ annoyed by it. So I went to her supervisor and following day she screamed at me how I went to her boss and was acting completely unprofessional and out of control and sent me home without pay. Again reported everything to HR… all of my complaints could be verified through jail’s video footage and they would just sweep it under the rug. I started reaching out to jail staff for help/ direction and following day came back to all the upper management in the building. Gave me 3 written counselings for “negativity”, not doing my job (which is absolutely disgusting lie. Patient requests to be seen where being answered and pts were seen within 24-48 hours max where when I started it was back up over a week. I completely reformed medication ordering system, the overtime I put in, etc. absolute kick in the face) and discussing vitalcore business with the consumer (officers) which I didn’t even know they were considered a consumer. Their message was loud and clear that they didn’t care to fix anything and I was beating a dead horse. Later that afternoon the higher ups called me in to tell me they were “restructuring the schedule” and would call me if they needed me. 2 months of zero contact from them while they are extremely short staff, I wasn’t included in any group messages of new schedules/ staffing needs. So basically they fired me but were too big of cowards to do so. I should have tried to get unemployment but honestly I don’t even want the association with the company.

The jail administrator and the jail staff are amazing but I can’t tell you how big of a disgrace this company is to the nursing field and to the jail. The pay is GREAT but it’s not worth risking your license or your sanity!
