My wife and I began working with Gerry in late 2014 prior to both if us entering retirement. Having spent over 35 years in the financial services industry I knew it was important to have independent fiduciary investment and tax advice. Our previous money manager had too many high risk items in our portfolio. We had met with them and asked to be more conservative since we were retiring. But it fell on deaf ears. After our initial interview with Gerry, we saw how our investments could to be more secure and more smartly invested and develop a complete plan on how much we can take annually without touching our principle. Definitely something we felt had to be done sooner, rather than later. My brother was shopping for a financial planner and asked me who I was using and if I was happy with him, I told him and set up a meeting so they could discuss his finances. A few weeks later I asked my brother how the meeting went and he said he had decided on a financial planner and he wasn’t my guy. My brother does very meticulous research on every project he works on, so I asked him why he chose Gerry over my adviser. The list was long and impressive but it hinged on Gerry being a ‘for fee’ adviser which meant he was not tied to any specific set of investment products, and the fact that he was a CPA and could seamlessly consider tax implications along with investments. I met with Gerry and he reviewed my holding and prepared a comprehensive ‘Mutual Fund Fee Analysis’ which contrasted my present holdings fee structure with equivalent low cost Index Funds. I had a 9 year history with my old adviser, so dissolving that relationship was very difficult for me, but it had to be done. I relish the opportunity to tell the world how pleased my wife, Christine, and I, are with Gerry Barraso & United Financial Planning Group advising us financially. I'll give you the reader's digest version. We are a blue-collar couple. Chris is a nurse working in a pediatrician's office. I'm a licensed master plumber in a mom Pop business since 1974. Between weddings & college tuitions for our 3 children we always tried to save. Unfortunately, we were all over the place in assorted mutual funds, whole life insurance...etc. Around my age 55 we started asking around for advice, mostly hitting dead ends. At that time i began scouring the internet hitting more dead ends or unsatisfactory solutions. We decided we wanted to dissolve all our assets & merge them into one account. Almost all advisers had a problem for doing what we wanted. I was not going to settle for something that we weren't satisfied with. Almost all calls were never returned. Maybe it was too difficult. What does a plumber know, right? This went on for quite a while but all during my searches Gerry's name came up repeatedly & reading that he was a CPA I never read between the lines that he was also a financial adviser (once again what does a plumber know?). So I took a flier & called (it may even had been a weekend call) Gerry himself answered the phone. I told Gerry what we wanted to do "no problem it's done all the time)! We spoke a few more times & he was so knowledgeable & reassuring he obviously realized the angst that people have making this life changing decision. We gathered together all our financial records & went to Gerry's office to meet him in person. The best decision we've ever made! Gerry made a major impression on us & we left our life's hard-working earnings in Gerry's hands to return a week later to Gerry's investment model. Once again impressive, of course, we signed on. Chris retired to be a hands-on Grandma & Gerry seamlessly transferred her 401K to our account. He cashed in our life insurance to an annuity in our account. Nothing is a problem. No worries about taxes Gerry handles them. When I'm supposed to take my RMD Patty, my account executive, takes care of it & sends me a confirmation email. Anytime Gerry redistributes our investments we get an email. Everything is transparent. The absolute best phone call I ever made!
