Understanding the Cooperative Structure

It's crucial to understand that Southwest Electric Cooperative is a member-owned cooperative, not a traditional corporation. This fundamental difference shapes its priorities and operations. As a cooperative, SWECO is governed by a board of directors elected by its members – the people who receive electricity service. Profits are returned to members in the form of capital credits, rather than distributed to shareholders. This structure fosters a strong sense of community ownership and accountability, reinforcing SWECO's commitment to serving the best interests of its members. The cooperative model promotes long-term sustainability and encourages a focus on providing affordable and reliable electricity while investing in the infrastructure necessary to meet future energy needs.

Outage Management and Reporting

SWECO recognizes the inconvenience and disruption caused by power outages. The cooperative has invested in advanced technologies and robust procedures to minimize outage duration and restore power as quickly as possible. Members can report outages through the SWECO website, mobile app, or by calling the customer service line. The mobile app provides real-time outage maps and updates, allowing members to stay informed about the status of restoration efforts. SWECO also utilizes proactive measures, such as vegetation management and equipment upgrades, to prevent outages from occurring in the first place. The commitment to rapid response and clear communication during outages is a significant factor in the positive customer feedback received.

Energy Efficiency Programs and Resources

Beyond providing reliable power, SWECO is dedicated to helping its members conserve energy and save money. The cooperative offers a variety of energy efficiency programs and resources, including home energy audits, rebates for energy-efficient appliances, and educational materials on energy-saving practices. These programs help members reduce their energy consumption, lower their utility bills, and contribute to a more sustainable environment. SWECO also provides information on renewable energy options, such as solar power, empowering members to make informed decisions about their energy sources. The commitment to sustainability extends beyond individual member actions; SWECO also invests in environmentally responsible practices within its own operations.

Community Involvement

Southwest Electric Cooperative is deeply rooted in the communities it serves. The cooperative actively participates in local events and supports various community initiatives. This commitment to community involvement strengthens the bond between SWECO and its members, fostering a sense of shared purpose and mutual support. SWECO understands that its success is intertwined with the well-being of the communities it serves, and it strives to be a responsible and engaged corporate citizen.

Future Initiatives

5 power outages in the past two weeks due to work with NO notification. Called the reps. They said they reached out to some but not all... they always remember to reach out when a bill is due. An apology is not enough for bad business practices PERIOD. These aren’t 5-10 minute outages. These are 2 to 6 hour outages. With NO notification to “select” few. Being courteous on the phone after the fact is not what I pay you for. Natural disasters are UNDERSTANDABLE for no notification obviously. Scheduled work that everyone I spoke to didn’t know about especially the one on DEC 23 when some of us were cooking for the holidays and got surprised with a 5 hour power outage are UNACCEPTABLE. If you try to pull the line we are trying to accommodate your electrical needs with state of the art and up to code equipment like you are doing us a favor save it, because we are MOST CERTAINLY paying for it and it’s the law. You should be REQUIRED to notify EVERY SINGLE customer and not just pick and choose at random and hope the word spreads.

Not a fan. Our rates seem to triple the instant there is the slightest demand. They stopped sending me account updates and shut off our power over 93 cents. If there is another option for your, home take it.

Terrible. We had a rental, sold the property, it was tenant occupied. Buyer never notified them, so now I am fighting collection for a bill acquired on a property we don't own. Spoke to Craig huff on the phone months ago, he knows who the buyer was. Called the collection agency, they got rude when they couldn't tell me how to resolve the issue and hung up on me. Use caution when dealing with this company.
