We used Jennifer Tratz to do our taxes for 2023. It was our first year in business and we felt overwhelmed and therefore wanted to find someone that was knowledgeable and that we could trust to guide us. We were impressed by her reviews online and decided to sign an engagement letter with her. We had all of our information ready for her to file in January of this year because we wanted to get everything ready early and not have to worry about it. She confirmed with us that everything had been filed at the end of February. In July, we received a notice from Florida Revenue that we had not filed our return. When we asked Jennifer about it, she said that because we are an S Corp we didn’t need to file this return. She asked us to scan her over the notice we received and that she would contact to them. A couple of weeks ago, we received another notice from Florida Revenue telling us that we owed a $300 penalty for not filing our taxes and if they didn’t receive the money they would send us to a collection agency. We asked Jennifer what was going on and she told us that she phoned Florida Revenue and that they were charging us an excise tax which is usually charged to a company that sold goods and therefore shouldn’t apply to us. She said that they weren’t clear on why they would be charging us this tax but that we would have to pay the $300 for not filing the return . We found this explanation to be very strange, so we called Florida Revenue and they told us that our Accountant did not inform them that we were an S-corp. They asked us to confirm a couple of things and then told us that we did NOT have to pay and to disregard the notice. We emailed Jennifer and asked her why she had told us that we had to pay the $300 when Florida Revenue told us that we didn’t. She has now stopped responding to our emails. This was our experience with this very unprofessional company.
