I went to Zenith Advisors last year (2023) and asked them two questions - I have a lump sum of money to invest, give me options and can you show me how to do a back door Roth IRA. Daniel was my advisor and told me yes he could do both. For my first question, he gave me the option of an annuity. When it came time to do the Roth back door IRA, he said no, that I my income is too high.

He also gave me advice to max out our regular IRAs to reduce our taxes. So I put 2023 and 2024 contributions in. Then when I went to do my taxes, I was not able to deduct the IRA contributions because of the income limits. Obviously I should have googled the income limits for the IRA contributions but since I hired Zenith for financial advice, I didn’t think I had to. I ended up needing to withdraw those contributions because since they were added to an existing IRA, I was in a pro rata situation (contributions consisting of tax deductible and non tax deductible contributions).

Took my money back to Fidelity and asked them the same questions. They helped me with investing the lump sum and also helped with the back door Roth IRA. This was also complimentary since I had my money with them. Paid about $3K to Zenith and didn’t accomplish anything.
